: : kitchenslave = toru : :
A longtime fan of mum-mum, toru, has decided to set up her/his (?!?) blog.
Check it out at the kitchenslave’s food blog.
Another temptation brought to you by Wena.
: : Hot Seat : :
Last nite, a few of us went to eat at this new eatery called Hot Seat in Pandungan. Hot Seat? Spicy? Full of chillis? Well, some of the the dishes. Not all but what we had tasted pretty good. We were so full at the end of it. 5 of us went to get stuffed and we were so stuffed we couldn’t move.
Min Yen : Hey! Looks like pickled onions!
Cheh! This gal ah… so cheeky lah! Actually, they were longan fruit (or longan nuts if you were in the USA) with water added to it as well as the syrup from the can to sweetened it. Very refreshing and cooling drink.
This is the ikan bakar @ BBQ fish with spicy sambal (chilli paste) and lime. The fish used is fresh dorian fish and it was tasty and juicy as well. Flesh was firm and not tough. Definitely very fresh and tasty. We whacked the whole thing i.e. nothing was left on the plate that was edible, even the sambal!
Of course there must be chips. Not french fries but chippy chips, Brit-style. Plenty of salt (yeah, we were gluttons for high blood pressure) to go with it and very nice.
Again, the fish was dorian fish but it was served with a very nice tasting white sauce and fried rice. The salad itself was very fresh and sweet. Not the usual bland stuff. Entire dish was polished off completely. By the way, we all had a little communal dinner where we shared food amongst the group. It helps to ease the cravings for other people’s food.
I had the Devois Lamb with this nice sauce over it. Not sure what was the sauce but it was very very tasty and yummy and delicious and mouthwatering and… and… went very well with the chips! The lamb portion was huge! Definitely needed to share it out with everyone else!
The name of this salad was Waldorf Salad. There were apples, pears (I think), celery and some pieces of grapes with mayonnaise sitting on a bed of lettuce. First time I had this salad and I was addicted immediately. Needless to say we polished off everything, leaving the empty plate shining away.
The roti telur @ egg bread which was one of the best we’ve ever eaten in Kuching. All of us have eaten the mamak rotis and it’s very hard to find a decent roti canai (a type of indian bread) in Sarawak. The curry was very spicy and very tasty.
Chris : Do you pak-pak (clapping her hand soundlessly) the roti?
Waitress : Yep.
Chris : Ok! I want one! Must pak-pak one!
Haha! We had a good laugh at this. Most people who cook roti canai in Kuching don’t smash the roti together to loosen it but seems like this place did. So, Chris was very happy with her meal, eating away the spicy curry when she couldn’t quite take it! (Chris : Aiya! U ah!)
By the time we finished everything, we could barely walk! We will definitely be going there again for food because the food were very reasonable. With all the food we had there as well as drinks for everyone, it came up to RM62.50. They served an excellent choice of Asian food as well as Western meals as well.
Hot Seat is located directly in front of Everrise Supermarket in Pandungan. You can’t miss the sign or the banner advertising for Malay food. BTW, the chef is a Muslim and also used to work for Holiday Inn. So, it’s good to get a nice meal but at lower costs. Sandy T (the woman rushing the entire show and quite well too) is there to supervise daily. Hot Seat Cafe caters for private functions as well so feel free to order something from them or just have a nice place to eat.

: : Feet Tired : :
Been standing for nearly the whole day for 18 hours with 2 hours sleep. Comes with the job. Luckily doesn’t happen all the time.
So, while waiting for my hair to dry before going to bed, I found Loopy Meals via PPS.
Nite nite ppl.
: : Pork Leg Stew ~ Nonya Style : :
A CNY treat for everyone. How to make Pork Leg Style, Nonya Style. Can’t find it in Kuching coffee shops, that’s for sure but it’s a great tasting dish. For the Muslims, I think you can substitute it with chicken. Granny is going to try it one day to see how it tastes like.
Morning.
Wena : Wait wait ah! Gotta rush to office ah! Forgot got meeting today! Can cook this afternoon ah?
Granny : Aiya you! So forgetful one! Ok lah! I wait till you balik (return home).
Afternoon.
Wena : Ok back. Wah! Everything ready already ah?
Granny : Ya! Half pork leg and I tumbuk (pound) the things already lah! I tumbuk the small onion, ketumbar (coriander powder used for making curries, but no tumeric/kunyit added into it) and cekuk.
Wena : Cekuk? What that ah?
Granny : Neh! Like some root herb lah! Need to put in.
Granny : First ah! Put oil into claypot and make sure hot hot first ah! Then put in tumis (paste) and fry until harum (fragrant). Must not burn one!
Granny : Then hor, put in pork leg.
Granny : Campur (mix) until cover with tumis (paste) ah. Cook until water come out ah.
Granny : Then ah, put in light soy sauce. Campur (mix). Add some pekat kicap (thick soy sauce) until get color you want lah! Add in 1 and 1/2 tablespoon sugar ah. Campur (mix).
Granny : Put in 2 tablespoon rice vinegar ah! Must put in one.
Granny : Cook on low fire until lembut (soft, the meat that is).
The meat after 1 hour of simmering. Still a bit hard but definitely cook. Another way to do this is to cook everything in a frying pan on a low fire and then put it all into a crock pot to let it cook for a long time. No black mushrooms were added because it would change the taste of the stew.
The claypot can be put into the stove with no problems but it does take a long time for the pot to heat up. Still, it retains the heat quite well and the sauce and herbs really soak into the pork after a long time. One of my favourite dishes although she doesn’t make it that often.
What is cekuk? According to Granny, it’s a root used as a herb in Malay cooking although not easy to find in Sarawak. Anyone knows the English word for it? Tried to google for it but nothing pops up.
Anyway, a CNY treat for everyone.
Granny : I tell you, ha, long time ago, one CNY, your Kuku (Uncle) bring his friend to the house. He makan (eat) my pork leg and want to know recipe to do business ah! I dun wan to give him know.
Haha! Ah well. She’s not getting any younger and I don’t think he reads blogs. At least, I hope not. But, she enjoys cooking a lot and now doesn’t mind letting other people know how to cook it.
So, let me know how it turns out ya!
