: : Nonya Otak-Otak : :
What to do with a freezer full of mackeral.
Granny : Nah! Here! Try this!
Wena : Err…what’s inside?
Granny : Aiya! Otak-otak lah! I make one! Nonya style – must steam one wor!
Wena : Ok then! So big one!
Granny : Yalah! The tenggiri (mackeral) so big that easy to cut big big loh!
Wena : Oohhh…it looks nice.
Granny : Yah! Rub some santan (coconut milk), kunyit (tumeric powder), some chilli powder, serai (lemongrass) on the fish. Wrap with banana leaf and steam lor. Easy!
Wena : *munch munch* Nice nice.
Granny : Better than outside one. Put in oven or panggang (grill) not so good. This better. This is Nonya style. Cook like this in Penang one.
Haven’t posted up conversations like this in a long time. Hope you enjoy it folks. And for those who are new, Granny does talk like this. It’s always fun to talk to her like this. Sound very coy. LOL!
waaahhh..i want some! looks absolutely delicous! š
Cheers!!! š
Hi,
I accidentally found your site the other day and this is my first time commenting. This looks sooooooo yummy. I wish we had banana leaves for cooking in Japan. I think Iām going to be a Granny fan. : )
Vampire: I still prefer the Muar dry otak-otak.

just curious, is it otah or otak? i’d seen people naming it otah n otak. i dunno where is e best otah/otak found but i know pizzahut s’pore has tis otah pizza.
it’s otak, not otah.
yep penang’s nyonya otak-otak is good! thai otak-otak is not bad too.
hii, i know it as otak-otak. although in sarawak they seem to call it otah-otah. think it’s something to do with the translation from malay to iban.

wena & lucia: i guess it depends on where u get it. i did a few searches myself, most places in s’pore named it as otah. but in west malaysia as i travel along, i c otak, some place named it otak. so i am confused. hehe! so i guess e conclusion is it varies from place 2 place. from ur explanations, it seems dat otak is e original, somehow otah is like more SLANG word. dunno…can u actually find tis in kamus dewan? becoz otak(brain) sounds veli disgusting 2 me 2 b named a food.:)
I’ve had Otak Otak both grilled and steamed and I have to admit I like the steamed one better. At my restaurant, I serve both versions, allowing the guest to choose which one to have.
Did sombody know whre can i find otak-otak in kuching ?
