It was a dark and stormy night. The skies were dark. It all started like this…

Opening Act

Granny : Wah! Sky dark lah! Better go now! Else basah (wet) at Kuching Fest!

Wena : No lah! Still early! Only 5 pm. No stall buka (open) now lah.

Granny : *Sigh* Okay. Go at 5:30 pm okie? Can can?

Wena : Yes. No worries. 🙂 You know what you want?

Granny : Ya ya! I wanna try giant u char kueh, thai bee hoon again, chee cheong fan!

Wena : 🙂 . Okay then. I’ll bring basket this time. Easier to carry.

Granny : Ya! Must bring one lor!

Act I : Chee Cheong Fan

Prawn Chee Cheong Fan

Granny : Wah! Look so small lah!

Hawker : Auntie ah! Wan to order or not?

Granny : Yah. Two chicken and two prawn one ah. Long time to cook or not?

Wena : Errr… sounds like too much.

Granny : No lah! See? So small one! Can finish!

Wena : Hmm…. sure or not?

Granny : Aiya! If cannot finish, eat tomorrow loh! 😉

(Postnote : We could not finish half of it! Did not put up the pic of the chicken chee cheong fan as it look so horrible when we put it on the plate. Not photogenic at all! :p)

Act II : Satay

Wena : You sure you want to eat satay again?

Granny : Yah lah! Yesterday only eat 3 pieces!

Wena : Okay. If you say so.

(Postnote : She only ate two pieces tonight. ;p)

Act III : Thai Bee Hoon

Granny : Yay! Can eat eat spicy one.

(Postnote : She finished half the portion by herself.)

Act IV : Giant U Char Kueh

Granny : Where is the u char kueh stall ah? Cannot see one!

Wena : Over there lah!

Granny : *Squints* Ah! Okay! We buy 3 pieces ah! One each : you, me, Ah Leng Kuku (Uncle Cyril).

Wena : Okay. Bit expensive lor. 3 pcs for RM2?

Granny : Try try once mah!

(Postnote : It was worth it. The pic show the U Char Kueh cut into half. Very crispy and fluffy. Pity no chuk (porridge) to eat it with.)

Act V : Life Cafe Spicy Noodles

Wena : I’m going to have some. (3rd time already!)

Granny : Okay. Make sure spicy oh.

(Postnote : She had half of it. TO HERSELF! :p)

Act VI : The Heavens Open Up

Granny : Aiyo! Raining lah!

Wena : Go back home lah! Not so bad yet!

Finale

The two Chinese ladies, one old and the other one young, managed to get back to their vehicle. Completely drenched in fresh and rainy water, they made their way back home for hot showers. To end such a memorable weekend, they tuck into a delicious spread of food. Granny is happy for another year.

Mum decided to start her own blog since me and my sister have started ours. Main theme is Asian Women in today’s world. Very serious blog woh! But knowing her, she’ll make it amusing and funny. 🙂

Have added in a link to the Universal Blues Band in Singapore. My nephew (but only 3 yrs younger than me!), Trevor Jalla, is one of the band members in a band formed by Danny Loong. Hearing him sing the blues, you wouldn’t know that he is a jungle boy. 🙂 They do occasionally play in Malaysia at No Black Tie, a Blues Place just behind Hotel Istana . To know when they are going to KL next, email them for updates at his site! In Singapore, they perform regularly at Harrys @ Esplanade and on the Singapore radio station at Perfect 10 (at least, I think they still do).

I’ve also been added to an interesting site called “Grow-a-Brain“. Very interesting actually. They put up links of interesting sites daily, including moi. 🙂 Good taste I should say. Hee hee! Anyway, it’s still worth it to check the links they have there.

The mysterious cuisine reporter in KL has decided to post some more pictures. Food looks damn good!

The location is at the Siam Kitchen at Mid-Valley Megamall. When I first saw the pictures, I thought that the deco looks so cool! Alas, the mysterious diner didn’t find the food all that spicy although it’s suppose to be Thai food. Hmm… I wonder if it’s because there was no request to make the food spicier? Hee hee! Going to get whack for that statement. However, it’s always a good practice to ask the waiter/waitress how hot/spicy is the food.

What can I say about Tom Yam soup? Definitely Thai all the way! A must have when sitting down to eat Thai food. I prefer having Tom Yam with seafood rather than with chicken. Somehow, it brings out the taste of the soup a lot better.

Unfortunately, I can’t write much about this restaurant as have not eaten there before. Perhaps, the generous diner will be willing to email me some comments about that food? 🙂 Still, the pictures speak for themselves.

Siam Kitchen is located in the Mid-Valley Megamall in Kuala Lumpur. Endless rows of shopping and restaurants!

Took Granny to Kuching Fest this evening. It was hilarious!

Granny : You don’t pay ah! You already pay for so many different types of food already you know! Everytime you tapau back for us!’

Wena : Errr… okay, if you say so.

Granny : Want to eat spicy food lah!

Wena : Okay okay okay.

Raw Stingray

Panggang (barbeque) Sting Ray on Banana Leaf

Granny : How they cook stingray?

Wena : Panggang (barbeque) on banana leaf with lots and lots of sambal. Thai style.

Granny : OKAY! We order one! I wanna taste sambal. Can taste what is inside.

(Granny’s Verdict : Sambal made from dried prawn, chillis, belacan, onions pounded together and later fried).

Chicken Satay with Peanut Sauce

Granny : Wah! Satay smell nice lah!

Wena : Err… sure can finish or not? Not yet finish walking around lah!

Granny : Can finish lah! Your ku-ku kuat makan (Uncle eats a lot!)

(Granny’s Verdict : Satay has no fat in it which was good. Stall is next to Sugarbun stall. Cute guy manning the stall too! :p )

Hawker : Tang Hoon a little bit. But kway teow no.

Granny : Try try lor. Tapau (take-away) one each.

(Wena’s Verdict : Tang Hoon was nearly finished by Granny. She luv it so much!)

Granny : What is that?

Wena : Japanese pancake.

Granny : Nice ah?

Wena : Yep. Loads of vegetables but a lot of mayonnaise.

Granny : Never mind. One time try enough.

(Granny’s Verdict : Not salty lah! Cheh! Have to eat with soy sauce!)

Wena : Okay, we get him this lor.

(Wena’s Verdict : I finished it as Uncle Cyril was having dinner outside. *wink*)

Didn’t managed to finish everything so saving it for tomorrow. Granny wants to go again tomorrow! Wah!

Tempting you all with a pic of food from KL. Taken recently. Now, is Wena really in KL or not?

Lala

I’ve always had a soft spot for lala. Probably because I cannot get it here in Sarawak. Sigh. Sarawakians, you do not know what you’re missing. It’s tasty. Better tasting than chuk-chuk. Oohhh! I miss it so much!

Ginger, garlic and shallots for cooking the above Lala dish!

This particular version was cooked with garlic, ginger, shallots, chilli padi AND chinese wine ‘shao xing jiu’. Yummy yummy for tummy!

The only place that one can possibly get this in East Malaysia is Kota Kinabalu. However, do not eat it during the red tide or rather HAB! You do want to survive the morning after, right? :p

I could be wrong but just have never seen anyone cooking it in Kuching! If there is a place, someone point it out to me quick!

Okay, enough suspense.

I have a confession to make. I have a soft spot for tau foo fa. *sheepish grin*

Leng Chee Kang and Tau Foo Fa

‘Hi! Back again? Came back everydah lah!’ That’s how bad it got : the lady manning the stall recognize me at Kuching Fest this evening. Bought some tau foo fa and leng chee kang for Granny and Uncle Cyril. The tau foo fa (soya bean jelly?) is extremely smooth. So far, the best I’ve had in Kuching. Unfortunately, this couple does not have a stall anywhere in Kuching. They only have the stall until 17 Aug when the fest is over. Sigh. Then again, they will also be opening a stall during the Moon Cake Festival along Carpenter Street.

Water Chestnut in Coconut Milk

I also brought back some Thai Dessert for Granny. This is water chestnut in coconut milk. *Dreamy sigh*. Will always have one if I’m having dinner/lunch at the Lok Thian restaurant. Very cooling. The water chestnut is first coated with tapioca flour and then cooked in water. Red food coloring and sugar is then added. Put it into a bowl and add some coconut milk. Lastly, top it with ice shavings. Yum!

Sushi from Tenichi

Tenichi, the Lok Thian Japanese restaurant, had a modest booth at the Kuching Fest. Shown here are some of the sushi available and not that expensive either. But, didn’t buy any as the Lunch Set is a better deal AND you get aircon when you go to eat at the restaurant.

Wade

Wade!!! (Did I get the spelling right? If not, let me know. Thanx.) Ohhh! Nice nice Indian kuih. Famous one is the Indian lady selling it at Kenyalang Park from 10 am onwards. It’s SO delicious.

Roasted Pork

Some pics of roasted pork and roast chicken. 🙂 Okay, an obvious non-halal dish. For non-Muslims, looks good. Crispy skin and all. 🙂

Taiwan Sausages

Am not sure why they call this Taiwan sausages. Looks suspicious like the Western pork sausages. Hmm… didn’t buy any. Looks too greasy but a lot of people were at the stall. From the notice, looks like some were spicy and some were not. Maybe will try it one day.
